Equality is about trying to treat every individual fairly and recognising that each person is entitled to the same opportunities in life. Equality is not actually about treating everyone the same, but recognising that the needs of each individual might be met in many different ways: Equality focuses on those areas covered by the law, namely the key areas of race, gender, disability, religion or belief, sexual orientation and age. In addition to the legislation which seeks to prevent discrimination in all these areas, we have a public duty to promote equality and remove discrimination in race, gender and disability. People must not be unfairly discriminated against because of any of these factors and we must all contribute to creating a positive workplace environment where discriminatory practices and discrimination no longer happen. [Here] Diversity is an approach that values individual difference. In terms of education each member of staff should aim to recognise, value and manage difference to enable all learners to contribute and realise their full potential. All staff should consider the backgrounds of individual students, cultural differences and importantly differences in learning styles and attitudes. All human beings are a product of genetic characteristics and the environment in which they are raised. Diversity is the attempt of an organisation to recognise that all human beings are individuals and as such must be catered for as uniquely as possible.
