Firefox add-ons are small pieces of software that add new features or functionality to your installation of Firefox. Add-ons can provide Firefox with new search engines, foreign-language dictionaries, or change the visual appearance of Firefox. Through add-ons, you can customize Firefox to meet your needs and tastes.
Here are some of the most useful add-ons for tutors and students.
Open IT OnlineOpen IT Online allows you to open your documents and images online without the need of any software to be installed. Open IT Online supports Google Docs, Google Apps, Zoho, ThinkFree and Vuzit online services. It handles:
- Documents (*.doc, *.docx, *.rtf, *.odt, *.sxw) [Word 2007, Word 97/2000/2003 and OpenOffice Writer formats are supported]
- Spreadsheets (*.xls, *.xlsx, *.csv, *.ods, *.sxc) [Excel 2007, Excel 97/2000/2003 and OpenOffice Calc formats are supported]
- Presentations (*.ppt, *.pptx, *.pps, *.odp, *.sxi) [PowerPoint 2007, PowerPoint 97/2000/2003 and OpenOffice Impress are supported]
- Images (*.jpg, *.gif, *.png)
When Firefox encounters one of the file types supported by Open IT Online, it shows the "Open With" dialog: if you have installed Open IT Online, you will get, among the others, an option to open the file online. Choosing this option, you will also have the possibility to choose which online service you want to use to open the file.
Open IT Online shows you also the file size of the document you could see online: this information helps you determine if you want to open the file online or not.

Delicious BookmarksDelicious is a social bookmarking service that allows you to tag, save, manage and share Web pages all in one place. It is particularly useful in some colleges where students or staff do not have roaming profiles (meaning that each time they log on to a different PC they will lose their internet bookmarks) as they can view their delicious bookmarks from any PC providing they have internet access.
This extension integrates your browser with Delicious. It does this by augmenting the bookmarking functionality in Firefox with an enhanced experience that offers the following advantages:
- Search and browse your Delicious bookmarks
- Keep up to date on your Network and Links For You
- Access your bookmarks from any computer at any time
- Keep your bookmarks organized using tags
- Share your bookmarks with friends or anyone on the Web
- Import your existing Firefox bookmarks
There is also a Classic Mode included for those who want the basic Delicious buttons without any sync or search features. This option is available when you install the add-on, and can be accessed later from the Delicious menu in Firefox.

With StumbleUpon you can also connect with friends and share your discoveries, meet people that have similar interests, and check out what other people are discovering.
This can be a useful tool for students who are researching, or tutors who are finding resources, as StumbleUpon will find similiar resources and you can connect with others who are looking (or have found) similiar things.
